The chapter resource will guide you through a series of steps to complete this portion of your farm plan. It includes background information on the key concepts along with examples of how to complete any templates.
Biodiversity templates
In this section, you’ll find blank templates that you can print or download to fill in electronically. These templates are compatible with Adobe Acrobat Reader – just download and save a copy to edit offline.

- NIWA's freshwater fish identification webpage – visit NIWA's page on freshwater fish for help identifying the different species.
- DOC native animal identifier – reference for more information about NZ native species including: birds, reptiles, bats, invertebrates, marine mammals and fish.
- NZ reptiles – contains information on the different reptiles found in NZ and what can be done to help protect them.
- NZ Plant Conservation Network – includes links to help identify native plants.
- NZ Birds Online – a resource to help with identifying New Zealand birds.
- The Cacophony Project – using AI to help identify the birds present and how the population is changing over time.
- Weedbusters – includes resources to help identify plant pests and guidance on how to manage them.
- iNaturalist – a community based public database that has maps of plant and animal species recorded throughout NZ. You can upload pictures and the community will help you identify them.
- Improving biodiversity – this page has additional resources on how to enhance biodiversity on your property including protecting special areas through covenants QEII covenants and a video series with Professor David Norton answering commonly asked questions.
- Farming with native biodiversity website – a large range of resources now managed by NZ Landcare Trust developed to support farmers and advisors managing native biodiversity within pastoral farm systems.
- MPI’s ‘Canopy’ hub for information on tree planting/management – MPI’s information and knowledge hub, ‘Canopy’ aims to provide New Zealanders with forestry projects of all sizes with sound, practical information to help them with the choices they make when joining or working in the sector.
- Trap NZ – a free service for recording trap, bait, monitoring, and biodiversity outcome data and see other projects going on in your area.
