There are a number of support channels and resources available to farmers affected by weather that have been designed to help you make informed decisions, while others contain management advice and strategies from farmers and industry experts.
Extreme weather events and earthquakes can occur at any time, so it is important to have a plan in place to help protect the safety and wellbeing of you, your family, farm team and livestock.
While farmers are typically very resourceful, having a plan can help ensure everyone in the farm team knows what to do in an emergency, who to contact and what their priorities are.
Consider what you would do if you didn’t have any power or communication for extended periods and access was cut off.
Is it worthwhile investing in a generator? If so, what size generator do you need? Do you have a portable battery powered radio with spare batteries to enable you to stay updated on the situation (RNZ is New Zealand’s statutory civil defence lifeline radio broadcaster). Do you have enough food and water on-hand if access to your farm was cut off?
Please contact B+LNZ's resources team at [email protected] to request printed copies of resources.
Farmstrong, in partnership with the Rural Support Trust, have gathered a suite of resources and practical advice to help you recover from an extreme event on their Getting Through website.
