This page contains the latest information about Cyclone Vaianu and key resources to help.
Cyclone Vaianu has now tracked away from mainland New Zealand after hitting the country’s north-east. It is
expected to affect the Chatham Islands on Monday. Most weather warnings across the country have been lifted.
B+LNZ recognises this is a tough time, particularly after repeated adverse weather events in the North Island. We want to assure farmers that we are here to support you. At this stage, this is a Civil Defence‑led response, and B+LNZ’s role is to support those efforts and provide practical on‑farm guidance where we can.
Key advice
- Safety remains your first priority at all times – please look after yourself, your family and your team.
- If you are able to, check in with your neighbours, especially those who are more isolated.
Cyclone recovery
- Make a plan to assess damage and plan your approach. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed – make a list of priorities and tackle jobs in stages.
- Use extreme caution with wind-thrown trees: These trees can be unstable, unpredictable and are under considerable tension. Make a plan before getting started with the chainsaw!
Make sure you:
- Keep children away.
- Wear full safety equipment.
- Make sure you have stable footing.
- Have a clear space to work and an escape plan.
- Have a clear communication system set up.
- Don’t work directly under wind-wrenched trees.
