This page contains the latest information about Cyclone Vaianu and key resources to help.
Cyclone Vaianu is currently expected to move across the North Island on Sunday 12 April, with the potential for damaging winds and heavy rain. There is still uncertainty around the exact track.
B+LNZ recognises this is a tough time, particularly after repeated adverse weather events in the North Island. We want to assure farmers that we are here to support you. At this stage, this is a Civil Defence‑led response, and B+LNZ’s role is to support those efforts and provide practical on‑farm guidance where we can.
Key advice
- Safety remains your first priority at all times – please look after yourself, your family and your team.
- If you are able to, check in with your neighbours, especially those who are more isolated.
Ahead of Sunday – prepare where you can
Now is the time to prepare as much as possible:
- Move stock to higher ground where needed, relocate autumn‑calving cows to safe areas, ensure generators have sufficient fuel, and prepare companion animals (food, medication and carriers) in case evacuation is required
- Secure loose items like troughs, gates, tanks and feed bins
- Move vehicles, machinery and tools undercover if possible
- Shift stock away from exposed paddocks and flood‑prone areas
- Clear drains, culverts and waterways
- Check generators, water systems and backup power plans
After the Cyclone
(This section will be updated as impacts become clearer and further expert advice is available.)
- Make a plan to assess damage and plan your approach. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed – make a list of priorities and tackle jobs in stages.
- Use extreme caution with wind-thrown trees: These trees can be unstable, unpredictable and are under considerable tension. Make a plan before getting started with the chainsaw!
Make sure you:
- Keep children away.
- Wear full safety equipment.
- Make sure you have stable footing.
- Have a clear space to work and an escape plan.
- Have a clear communication system set up.
- Don’t work directly under wind-wrenched trees.
