Farmers will get an opportunity to hear about the latest developments in sheep genetics at the Sheep Breeder Forum this May.

Sheep breeder forum

The Beef + Lamb New Zealand (B+LNZ) event in Christchurch on May 18 brings together stud breeders, scientists, and industry professionals from across the country. This year, the Forum runs alongside B+LNZ’s Out the Gate farmer event and Awards dinner, creating even more opportunities to learn, connect with peers, and celebrate the work shaping the future of sheep and beef farming.

Attendees can look forward to a full day of updates, discussion and interactive sessions focused on sheep genetics and the New Zealand Genetic Evaluation. The forum will also give delegates a first look at a new genetics tool rolling out via nProve later this year.

Developed through the B+LNZ-led Cool Sheep Programme, the tool will allow farmers to track the impact of sire genetics on their flock, by showing how those genetics flow into their replacement ewe flock, as well as their flock’s genetic trends over time.

The Forum opens with presentations from B+LNZ Chief Executive Alan Thomson and Head of Genetics Jason Archer, who outline B+LNZ’s strategic priorities for 2026/27 and how sheep genetics fits within that broader direction. Presentations will explore the future of B+LNZ’s genetics programme, B+LNZ’s role in providing tools needed to support ongoing genetic progress, and the long-term investment and funding models required to sustain genetic gain across the sector.

There will be sessions dedicated to the latest developments in nProve and the New Zealand Genetic Evaluation (NZGE), with speakers sharing progress on work underway in areas such as parasite resilience, meat quality, facial eczema, feed efficiency, and shedding sheep traits.

A series of breakout workshops will feature a demonstration of the new genetics tool, along with facilitated feedback to gather breeder perspectives on key topics and future priorities.

A relaxed evening featuring a combined networking dinner with B+LNZ’s Farmer Council and Kāhui offers the chance to reconnect with peers and continue conversations sparked during the day.

With a strong focus on collaboration and shared perspectives, the Forum remains an important opportunity for breeders to engage with emerging research, tools and industry priorities.
