Pilot Finishing Value (FV)

Finishing Value (FV) is a trial commercial measure being tested through the Dairy Beef Opportunities (DBO) Programme to help beef farmers compare the estimated genetic growth potential of beef-on-dairy calves. Expressed in kilograms, FV indicates a calf’s estimated liveweight advantage at 18 months compared with a standard beef-on-dairy calf, providing an additional tool to support stock selection decisions.

B+LNZ led the first pilot trial at a Frankton calf sale, testing how FV could be used in a real-world sale setting. The pilot FV is not a breeding value, and further trials will be carried out to assess whether it is fit for purpose and how effectively it supports buying and selling decisions. The results and industry feedback will help inform any future development and wider use of the measure.
