About

The Wainuioru Community River Care Group was set up after a community meeting, attended by more than 60 people, at the Wainuioru Hall in September 2017. We were keen to find out more about our water quality and come up with ways our river and catchment could be improved. We also had concerns about future regulations andother issues such as flooding, sediment and crack willow infestations throughout the catchment.

We set the group up as an incorporated society where the purposes of the society are to:

  •     Monitor the water quality and condition of the upper Wainuioru River.
  •     Develop and implement plans to improve and restore the water quality and condition of the upper Wainuioru River for future generations.
  •     Foster education and community spirit in the upper Wainuioru River catchment area, including the local school and iwi.

Our group committee has members that come from the diverse range of landowners who live in the upper Wainuioru catchment area. The Ministry for the Environment, Greater Wellington Regional Council scientists and Beef and Lamb NZ helped us develop our water quality monitoring plan, and we are carrying out quarterly water tests at six sites on the upper Wainuioru and tributaries down the catchment to Te Wharau Road.
