B+LNZ was proud to be part of the recent East Coast Farming Expo in Wairoa. A key highlight was the B+LNZ Station Challenge, which drew shepherds eager to put their skills to the test.

One of the highlights was the B+LNZ Station Challenge, which a strong interest with 10 teams of three stepping up to test their practical on‑farm skills. From crutching ewes to running hot wire and shifting gear at pace, teams were put through a series of challenges designed to reflect real‑world shepherding work. The challenge also included a theory test run by B+LNZ’s Farming Excellence team.
The top team on the day was Whenua Māori Te Whakaari Inc, led by team captain and B+LNZ Emerging Manager Sam Dewes, who helped guide his crew to a well‑deserved first place.
B+LNZ’s Mātanga Whenua Māori (Māori Agribusiness Advisor) for Tairāwhiti, Pania King, says the atmosphere throughout the challenge was something special.
“It was awesome to watch everyone getting stuck in. The teamwork, the grit – it all showed through on the day,” she says.
“Some of our local Farmer Council members absolutely loved giving it a go. There was plenty of banter, plenty of laughs, and some really strong performances.”
She says the event reflected the strength and spirit of the region.
“The mahi from every single competitor was outstanding. It was great to see so many farmers and future leaders stepping up, backing one another, and having fun along the way.”
