Take advantage of wellbeing initiatives

Farmers are the most important asset on farms. That’s why Beef + Lamb New Zealand (B+LNZ) support initiatives that strengthen the mental wellbeing of our rural communities. Two examples are Farmstrong and Spark the Chat – programmes making a real difference in the lives of rural communities.

Justine Kidd, GM Extension says, “At B+LNZ, we believe that looking after people is the number one priority. We’re committed to supporting initiatives that provide farmers with the tools, connection and support to improve their wellbeing.”

“Whether you’re looking for practical tools to manage change, navigate a tough time, or just need a reminder that you’re not alone, there are some incredible initiatives available to you and I really encourage farmers to take a moment to check them out.”

B+LNZ recently announced its ongoing support for Surfing for Farmers that is helping farmers connect, unwind, and prioritise their mental wellbeing. Below we share two more initiatives we support and how they can help your wellbeing.

Farmstrong

Farmstrong, the nationwide rural wellbeing programme, recently marked a major milestone – its 10-year anniversary.

Since its launch in 2015 by FMG and the Mental Health Foundation, with ACC joining as a strategic partner in 2016, Farmstrong has grown into a trusted name in rural wellbeing. Today, 82% of farmers are aware of the programme, and over 15,000 farmers each year credit it with improving their wellbeing.

Farmstrong shares simple, science-backed strategies to help farmers manage stress, build resilience, and stay mentally fit.

Topics include:

  • Managing stress and pressure
  • Getting through adverse events
  • Healthy thinking strategies
  • Sleep, nutrition, and physical fitness
  • Scheduling rest and recovery
  • Its new “mental fitness toolbox” is designed to help farmers maintain a clear headspace and perform under pressure – something Sam Whitelock says is key to enjoying farming and staying resilient.

All Farmstrong resources are free and available online at www.farmstrong.co.nz, and the programme is active at events, in the media, and through partnerships with organisations like B+LNZ, DairyNZ, NZ Young Farmers, and many more.

Spark That Chat

Alongside Farmstrong, another initiative gaining traction in rural communities is Spark That Chat – a grassroots movement led by Jack Jensen, a young man on a mission to save lives through the power of connection and real talk.

Spark That Chat promotes good mental wellbeing through lifestyle choices and open communication. Jack travels the country creating spaces where people feel safe to share, connect, and support one another. His message is simple but powerful: vulnerability is strength, and meaningful conversations can change lives.
