Beef + Lamb New Zealand took the opportunity to showcase the careers available within the organisation and the red meat sector at Lincoln University’s recent Food and Fibre Awards.

The Awards evening, which recognised the top year one, two and three students, included a chance for students to mix and mingle with representatives from a number of primary sector industries and organisations.

Christine Lewis, B+LNZ’s South Island Extension Manager, represented B+LNZ at the Awards evening and said before the dinner students had the chance at a networking session to question various organisations about what they did and the career opportunities they offered.

She says the predominately third year students were very engaged and interested in the work B+LNZ undertakes on behalf of its levy payers.

“They were a great bunch and had lots of good questions about what B+LNZ did.”

Out of the 50-plus students she spoke to, only three or four were intending to go farming, the rest were planning a career in agribusiness or agricultural-related industries.

Christine says it was particularly pleasing to see the calibre of students coming through wanting to build a career in the agricultural industry.
