Remember to vote in the referendum

// B+LNZ

There are only two weeks left to have your say in the 2021 sheepmeat and beef levy referendum. It’s your chance to have a say on whether B+LNZ continues to exist.

Get your vote in now – there’s still time, even if you’ve realised you’re not on the electoral roll.

During referendum roadshow events in Southland recently, B+LNZ chairman Andrew Morrison spoke about the danger of voter apathy.

“I strongly encourage farmers to get out and vote. And to encourage their friends and neighbours to vote.

“It’s important you think about what a strong future looks like when you’re answering the three questions on the voting papers. Without a sheepmeat or beef levy – if there’s a ‘no’ result – there will be no organisation solely dedicated to working on behalf of sheep and beef producers.”

Key dates

Voting closes at midday on Friday 9 July.

To ensure postal votes reach the Returning Officer in time, you’ll need to get them in the mail by Tuesday 6 July. Or you can vote online right up until voting closes.

Still haven’t received a voting pack?

Note that if you haven’t received a voting pack (or an email from, you’re probably not registered.

If you receive B+LNZ communications such as our weekly e-diaries, it doesn’t guarantee you’re on the electoral roll, so it pays to check.

How to check if you’re on the roll

You can check by emailing or calling 0800 BEEFLAMB (0800 233 352).

How to register

The good news is there’s still time to register and vote. Anyone who owns sheep or cattle (including dairy cattle) is eligible to vote.

The best way to get more info on the referendum

Roadshow events are still running in some regions, and are a great opportunity to find out more about B+LNZ’s levy-funded work and the referendum offer, meet B+LNZ leaders and ask questions – and get off the farm and socialise over a bite to eat.

Note that we’re keeping a close eye on the COVID-19 situation but at this stage all remaining roadshow events are going ahead as planned.
