Plan some time off farm this Summer

// Resilience and wellbeing

With summer just around the corner, B+LNZ is encouraging farmers and rural professionals to plan some time off farm and make the most of opportunities to connect with others, try something new, and recharge.

Two popular initiatives, Surfing for Farmers and Rural Riders, are back for 2026, offering farmers a chance to get away from the day-to-day demands of farming, get active, and spend time with others who understand rural life. B+LNZ is proud to support both programmes, which will run at 39 locations around the country.

Jason Griffin, B+LNZ’s Extension Team Manager for the North Island says taking time to recharge, connect with others and enjoy yourself is an investment in both your wellbeing and your farm business.

“Farmers are incredibly committed to what they do, but nobody performs at their best when they're running on empty. Taking a couple of hours off farm to connect with others, have some fun and clear your head can be incredibly valuable."

"Looking after your wellbeing is just as important as looking after your stock, land and business. Sometimes that starts with simply stepping away from the farm for a few hours and doing something you enjoy,” he adds.

Take a break with Surfing for Farmers

B+LNZ is a Community Sponsor of Surfing for Farmers, a nationwide initiative that brings farmers together for an evening of surfing, socialising, and good food.

Whether you've never stepped on a surfboard before or you're a seasoned surfer, everyone is welcome. Best of all, it's completely free and all equipment is provided.

Registrations for the 2026 season are now open, and even if you've participated before, you'll need to register again for this summer. Once registered, local coordinators will share everything you need to know.

Each session wraps up with a BBQ, providing a chance to catch up with other farmers and enjoy some time away from the farm.

Hit the trails with Rural Riders

For those not near a beach or if surfing isn’t your thing, Rural Riders offers another opportunity to get off farm and connect with your rural community.

As a Premium Sponsor, B+LNZ is proud to support this initiative, which encourages farmers to get outdoors, enjoy some exercise, and spend time with good people.

The programme welcomes riders of all abilities, from complete beginners through to experienced mountain bikers.

Participants simply need to bring a bike and helmet. And if you're not keen to ride, you're still welcome to come along to the BBQ and enjoy the social side of the event.
