Ovine age verification for EU and UK Markets

As we approach the end of the year, Beef + Lamb New Zealand (B+LNZ) is reminding farmers about the ovine age verification requirements that were updated in 2022.

In 2022, the period for 100 percent age verification of lambs was extended. Previously, processors carried out thorough checks from 1 October to 31 December. To improve accuracy and compliance, this period now begins a month earlier, running from 1 September to 31 December. During this time, all animals in each mob presented as lambs—especially those that could be confused with older sheep—must be mouthed either in the yards or on the processing chain.

Nick Beeby, acting chief executive of the New Zealand Meat Board, explains, "Meat processors and exporters must verify the age of lambs intended for European Union and United Kingdom sheepmeat quota markets throughout the production year to ensure New Zealand complies with our international treaty obligations.”

Why age verification matters

Correct age classification is vital for meeting New Zealand's international treaty obligations and qualifying for preferential tariff rates. To qualify for our special quotas, the EU and UK markets require New Zealand to have a reliable verification program to ensure the proper age classification of sheep and goats. Misclassifying animals, especially lambs that might actually be older sheep, can have serious consequences, including being downgraded to mutton.

What can farmers do

Given these changes, it's more important than ever for farmers to ensure that the animals they send to processors are accurately identified and prepared. B+LNZ advises farmers to check their animals before sending them to make sure that any lambs sent to processors are actually lambs.
