For those interested in what it takes to become a farm trainer or looking to take their first step into a farming career, Growing Future Farmers (GFF) is hosting four open days across the country this June, and an online session in July.

These events are a chance for prospective cadets, farm trainers, parents and caregivers to learn more about GFF’s award-winning two-year cadetship programme. Attendees will hear first-hand from current students, trainers, and programme staff about what’s involved and where the journey can take you.
The GFF programme combines hands-on experience with formal NZQA-recognised training, including classroom learning, independent study, and group sessions. With placements available in 10 regions across the country, it’s a practical and immersive way to kickstart or grow a career in the sheep and beef sector.
Student applications for the 2026 intake open on 2 June 2025, and expressions of interest to become a farm trainer are welcome year-round.
Beef + Lamb New Zealand (B+LNZ) proudly supports Growing Future Farmers as part of its commitment to developing people and capability in the sector by providing funding support for the programme.
Olivia Weatherburn, B+LNZ National Programme Manager says, “Growing Future Farmers is a fantastic pathway into the industry! It helps fast-track practical skills and build confident, work-ready graduates. We’re proud to support a programme that plays such an important role in ensuring our sector has a strong pipeline of skilled people into the future.”
The programme was recently recognised with the 2024 Rabobank People Development Award at the B+LNZ Awards.
