Beef + Lamb New Zealand (B+LNZ) recently welcomed three new Farmer Councillors to its Western North Island region.

Their appointment took place during the Western North Island Farmer Council Annual Meeting, with all Farmer Council meetings recently held across the country in each region. These meetings bring together local farmers and councillors to reflect on the year, review regional delivery plans, and welcome new members. They’re a valuable opportunity to connect, share insights, and ensure B+LNZ’s extension activities continue to deliver real value to farming communities.

The B+LNZ Farmer Council plays a vital role in shaping regional priorities, identifying key topics, and supporting the delivery of events and initiatives that matter to farmers. Councillors bring grassroots knowledge, leadership, and a commitment to helping the sector thrive.

We’re pleased to introduce three new councillors joining the Western North Island Farmer Council. Each brings a unique perspective, strong regional ties, and a passion for practical, farmer-led progress.

Dan Leary – Raetihi

Da runs a 450-hectare mixed sheep and beef operation in Raetihi with his partner, focused on sustainable land use, animal welfare, and succession planning. He’s hands-on in all aspects of the business and committed to building a resilient, community-connected farm.

Dan currently sits on the B+LNZ Hub Farm Steering Committee, supporting knowledge-sharing and innovation across the sector. He was encouraged to stand for the Council by a former member who saw his potential to offer grounded, forward-thinking representation.

“I value open dialogue, practical solutions, and collaborative leadership. I’m keen to work alongside like-minded people who aren’t afraid to challenge each other respectfully and who share a commitment to improving outcomes for farmers.”

Andrew Bendall – Feilding

Andrew works as Territory Manager for Headwaters NZ Ltd, a sheep genetics company delivering high meat quality ram genetics into an integrated value-added supply chain, including the globally marketed Lumina lamb brand.

With a strong focus on innovation and productivity, Andrew is passionate about driving sustained profitability and promoting excellence across the red meat sector. He brings a commercial lens to the Council, with a belief in collaboration and delivering premium product to specification.

“I’m committed to challenging both farmers and the Council to back true innovation and apply an intergenerational lens to everything we do.”

Patrick Henderson – Ohingaiti

Patrick is General Manager of Hinau Station Ltd, a 2,200-hectare sheep and beef breeding and finishing business spread across three properties. His role involves navigating challenges, leading a tight-knit team, and driving system redesigns to improve performance.

Patrick’s leadership style is grounded in communication, inclusivity, and a deep pride in both people and place. He’s passionate about creating environments where people thrive and sees the Farmer Council as a platform to extend that impact.

“I take great pride in the people and place we’ve been tasked with leading. I feel that stands me in good stead to contribute meaningfully in a different environment.”
