If you’re considering a career in agriculture, or simply want to learn more about what a pathway into sheep and beef farming could look like, the Otiwhiti School of Agriculture Open Day on Saturday 6 June is well worth a visit.

Beef + Lamb New Zealand (B+LNZ) support cadetships across the country as part of our commitment to ensure the sector gains and retains talented and motivated people whom have the practical skills and knowledge to be successful in the sheep and beef farming sector.
Otiwhiti School of Agriculture offers a cadetship programme designed to grow skilled, confident, and capable farmers for the future. The open day provides a valuable opportunity to see first-hand how Otiwhiti supports and develops the next generation of people in farming.
Visitors will have the chance to explore the school’s facilities, meet the Otiwhiti team, and gain insight into the structure and expectations of the cadetship programme.
Attendees will also hear directly from current cadets about their experiences, gaining insights into what day-to-day life looks like, and the practical skills, knowledge and personal development they’ve gained through the programme.
For those unsure whether agriculture is the right fit, the open day is a low-pressure way to ask questions, understand career options, and see how structured cadetship programmes can provide a strong foundation for progressing in the sheep and beef sector. Parents, caregivers and supporters are also welcome, making it a useful opportunity for families to learn more about training and career pathways in farming.
Olivia Weatherbrun, B+LNZ’s National Programme Manager says well-supported on-farm training plays a critical role in attracting and retaining talent, while helping young people transition successfully into farming careers.
“Classroom learning or University isn’t for everyone, so those whom thrive in a more practical environment places like Otiwhiti are a great option to consider,” she adds.
