Science and research – your levies at work

In this podcast series, we’re delving into the projects, partnerships and people delivering value for sheep and beef farmers. In this week’s episode, Suzanne Keeling, B+LNZ Head of Science and Research, discusses how levy-funded science and research is delivering healthier stock and production improvements. Listen to the podcast.

Have your say: Good Employer 2040 survey

What does a good job on a sheep and beef farm look like today, and what should it look like in 2040? B+LNZ wants to hear from both employers and employees about what’s happening on farm now, what’s working well, what’s challenging, and what might need to change. The survey takes around 10 minutes, and your responses will help shape the next stage of the Good Employer 2040 project and future levy-funded investment in people and capability, helping ensure sheep and beef farming remains an attractive and rewarding career into the future. Complete the survey here and go in the draw to win a $100 voucher to a supermarket of your choice. The survey closes at midday on 16 November. Any questions can be directed to: [email protected]

Proposed regulation on the prolonged confinement of dogs – help inform our submission

MPI is currently consulting on a proposed regulation on the prolonged confinement of dogs – including farm dogs. The intent of the proposal is not to prohibit the confinement of dogs as part of normal and appropriate management practices, but to address situations where a dog is confined in a manner that causes it to display signs of suffering. However, it’s important any potential unintended consequences of the regulation are identified early in the process. Please help us do that by completing this short survey. The survey closes on 10 November and will inform our submission.

Ram nominations for the Sheep Progeny Test

B+LNZ invites stud breeders to nominate rams for the 2027 mating of the Sheep Central Progeny Test (CPT). Open to Maternal and Terminal sires, the CPT underpins B+LNZ’s national sheep genetic evaluation (the NZGE). Including a ram from your breed group 'connects' you to the NZGE and validates the performance of your group’s flocks against other NZ flocks. Nominations close Friday 20 November. Access the nomination form.

Consultation on changes to the Code of Welfare for rodeos

The National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee (NAWAC) is seeking feedback on proposed changes to the Code of Welfare: Rodeos. Submissions close at 5pm on 9 December 2026. The draft code, the consultation document, and details on how to make a submission are available on MPI's website. The New Zealand Rodeo Cowboys’ Association is also seeking feedback on the proposals to inform its submission. More information is available here.
