This week’s notices:
Last chance to nominate your bulls
Breeders have until Sunday 30 August to nominate bulls for the 2026 mating of B+LNZ’s across-breed Beef Progeny Test. Participating breeders receive valuable data on progeny performance, including growth, structural assessments, carcase traits (steers), and the maternal performance of daughters. Nominations are open to Angus and Hereford breeds. Find out more here.
B+LNZ says PCE’s ETS report a helpful contribution to discussion
This week the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment released a report on the current design of NZ’s Emissions Trading Scheme, particularly the treatment of forestry. It argues the current design is not sustainable over the long term and requires significant reform. B+LNZ has been leading the conversation on wholesale land conversion to forestry as a result of ETS settings since 2019, and we want to be involved in a conversation about addressing the issues raised in the report. For more information see our media release.
Resources available for lambing in bad weather
Lambing is now underway, and it’s a good idea to have a lambing kit prepared to give your lambs the best possible chance of survival during bad weather. We suggest including waterproof backpack or container containing lamb covers, iodine spray, bearing equipment, dextrose solution and syringe, gloves, veterinary lubricant, a towel and a thermos of warm water. See this news story for advice on assembling a lambing kit, along with a factsheet on reviving newborn lambs.
Complete our sheep genetics survey
B+LNZ’s Genetics team invites farmers, breeders and rural professionals to complete a short survey on the use of genetic tools and information in NZ’s sheep industry. The survey explores awareness, confidence and use of genetic tools such as breeding values, indexes and nProve. Insights will help inform B+LNZ’s genetics programmes and activities. The survey takes 5–10 minutes to complete and responses are anonymous. Take the survey.
