Take part in climate change policy positions workshops
B+LNZ recently ran a series of successful freshwater policy workshops – you can see the feedback here. We’re now planning a series of similar workshops on climate change policy. These workshops aim to facilitate detailed and open conversations with farmers to develop a package of policy positions. The workshops will be 3 to 4 hours long and held in several locations nationwide (dates and venues to be confirmed). Farmer input is vital to policy position development for B+LNZ and we will continue to test our thinking in the coming months. If you would like to provide input through these workshops, please register your interest here or by emailing lucy.evans@beeflambnz.com
Bull nominations for Dairy Beef Progeny Test (DBPT) closing soon
Breeders have until Friday 26 July to nominate their bulls for the 2024 mating of the DBPT. Nominations are open to all breeds. This year, the DBPT will transition to new sites and no longer include a formal path to market component with LIC, focusing instead on proving bulls that enhance the dairy beef market at all stages. Draft emissions reduction plan a mixed bag for sheep and beef farmers
This week B+LNZ responded to the release of documents on the Government’s second emissions reduction plan consultation, noting they contain some positive elements but also concerning ones. We’re digesting the consultation documents and will work with farmers over the coming weeks to develop a comprehensive response. Our primary concern is that there are a number of mentions of a definite price on agricultural emissions by 2030. From a sheep and beef sector perspective there is no need for a price if reductions are already happening. References to putting limits on whole-farm conversions to forestry are more positive. For more information see our media release.
