June 2026 marks a major milestone for B+LNZ’s Generation Next programme – celebrating 10 years of upskilling the next generation of sheep and beef farmers. Apply now for the 2026 programme.

Applications are now open for the 2026 programme and close 20 February.
Launched in 2016 in B+LNZ’s Southern South Island region, B+LNZ Generation Next has supported 466 graduates, equipping them with the skills, confidence, and industry connections needed to thrive. The programme blends practical learning – such as farm financial management – with personal development and strong networking opportunities.
Its success has seen the programme adopted nationwide, and in 2024, the Generation Next Alumni was introduced to keep graduates connected and learning beyond the initial programme. There are already 179 graduates involved in this growing network.
“Over the last ten years, the programme has seen hundreds of young farmers grow their skills and networks,” says Olivia Weatherburn, programme founder.
“The programme has had overwhelmingly positive feedback from participants. If you’re wanting to grow your career, your CV and your networks, now is the time to apply!”
Later this year an official celebration with alumni and supporters will take place. Alumni members who plan to attend Southern Field Days in Waimumu are encouraged to drop into the B+LNZ site in the big shed. There will be more celebrations later this year to mark the 10-year anniversary, keep a lookout in your e-diary.
How it works
Generation Next involves four workshops delivered over six months, with objectives including:
- Understanding farm business fundamentals – financial basics and management.
- Personal development: goal setting, leadership skills, and mentoring.
- Improving decision-making for farm business systems.
- Learning new technologies and ideas to apply on-farm.
- Building strong team culture within the workplace.
- Understanding overall industry goals and aims.
- Continued learning and networking through the Alumni programme post-graduation.
