Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s (B+LNZ) final catchment e-forum held in April featured catchment leaders Emma Crutchley, Lloyd McCall and Roger Dalrymple who shared their advice for other groups on how to maintain momentum.
Roger Dalrymple who Chairs the Rangitikei Rivers Catchment Collective says it is important to ensure the catchment group is farmer-led, has a vision for the community, allows others to tell your story and aims to regain the trust of the public and Government. “If you’re doing this, that’s success!”
Emma Crutchley who is on the governance committee for the Tiaki Maniototo, Upper Taieri Wai Catchment Restoration Project adds, “Get curious, listen to your group and give people a sense of ownership.”
“For us it’s about community, it’s about allowing space for everyone to take a bit of ownership and for everyone to feel included in working on something collaboratively.”
Lloyd McCall, a founding member of the Pomahaka Water Care Group talked about what it means to be successful and some challenges his group faced but reiterated that “one size doesn’t fit all when it comes to catchment groups”.
“If you have plenty of people involved it makes it harder to lose momentum because there’s always someone with the next idea.
“We’ve always been really transparent in sharing our successful and failures with the community and the community have been right behind us,” he says.
B+LNZ’s Environment Capability Manager Tom Orchiston says, “we know that farmers find it great to hear from other farmers, so it is fantastic to have these three experts share their advice and take questions from attendees.”
The Catchment e-Forum Series is part of B+LNZ’s Catchment Community Programme which supports farmers in taking a leadership role to establish or run groups.
