The launch of a new campaign to attract people to the food and fibre sector jobs has been welcomed by Beef + Lamb New Zealand (B+LNZ).
B+LNZ CEO Sam McIvor says the Opportunity Grows Here campaign complements the sheep and beef sector’s continuing investment in education and training systems and the promotion of the industry as a career pathway.
“We know a lot of on-farm jobs are found through word-of-mouth so it can be hard to know where to start. For people interested in our industry, it’s important we get the linkages in place for them, from finding a place to start through training and ultimately into a rewarding career. The Opportunity Grows Here website will be a useful tool for those getting started.
“Our focus is about getting the right people into the industry. Sheep and beef farmers feel a deep sense of purpose and this drives what they do and how they do it. People who could feel a similar sense of purpose, and who want a job with a great lifestyle and lots of diversity, should consider a job in sheep and beef farming.”
The red meat industry already accounts for more than 92,000 jobs, almost five percent of New Zealand’s full-time workforce, and generates $12 billion in income per year for New Zealand.
“Our sector will play a major role in the post COVID-19 economic recovery and we need talented, passionate people to be part of that.”
