In the lead‑up to this year’s Sheep Breeder Forum, Beef + Lamb New Zealand is offering a scholarship designed to encourage and inspire the next generation of geneticists and future breeders.

The Emerging Genetics Talent scholarship provides recipients with the opportunity to attend B+LNZ’s Sheep Breeder Forum, followed by the flagship Out the Gate event in Christchurch in May - two and a half days of learning, industry insights, and connection with breeders, farmers, scientists and industry professionals.
The scholarship is open to young people aged 16-24 years who have a genuine interest in sheep genetics, whether they are studying, working on farms, or beginning their journey as aspiring breeders. Successful applicants will have their registration, travel, and accommodation covered, giving them access to the latest research, discussions, and world-class speakers.
This initiative is part of B+LNZ’s wider commitment to building capability in genetics within the sector and supporting those who want to contribute to genetic improvement, whether through technical pathways or on‑farm breeding.
Jason Archer, Head of Genetics at B+LNZ, says that the scholarship is designed to offer access to opportunities that young people might not otherwise have, whether that’s connecting with breeders, learning directly from industry experts, or gaining insights that support their development.
“Our goal is to encourage young people who are excited about genetics, whether that’s someone who wants to work in the genetics field as a scientist or rural professional, or an aspiring breeder developing their first flock. This scholarship is about opening doors and supporting those who want to build a future in the genetics space.”
Applications for the scholarship must be received by Sunday 12 April. Applicants under 18 will need to travel with a parent or guardian.
