Getting the most out of your forage crops

With the swing in commodity prices, farmers are on the lookout for strategies to dial up production and capitalise where they can. For those with some flat land, scaling up the forage cropping programme has the potential to be one of these strategies.

While the returns appear favourable on paper, the devil is always in the details, and without a decent plan, adding a cropping programme into the mix can bring with it a whole lot of unwanted complications (and costs).

To assist farmers, these workshops will draw on the skills and experience of local farmers, contractors, and agronomists to maximise the benefits of forage cropping investments.

Topics covered

  • Understanding the wider farm system
    • Which crop for which stock class.
    • Yield and bulk vs stock performance.
    • Multispecies crops and undersowing.
  • Timing and sowing method
    • Seedbed preparation.
    • Soil temp and ground conditions.
    • Direct drill vs cultivation.
