Bang for buck – where to invest or re-invest.

Sheep and Beef farmers have delivered record profits in the 2025-26 year. The outlook for our sector remains strong which has got many thinking of what to do with their profits. Re-invest in the farm, or look off-farm for diversification options.

Session overview

  • We’ll investigate on-farm investments and hear from farmers about their decision-making process while determining where the best bang for buck is. How do you decided where to start, what is going to give you the best returns, and what investments will allow you to achieve your long-term goals?
  • What investments help buffer your business from the ups and downs of markets and seasons, and which will put you in the strongest position to take advantage of record prices?
  • A farmer panel of seasoned farmers and developers will help us tease out the complexities of these decisions.
  • If portfolio diversification and off-farm investment is of interest to you, Tim Fairbrother from Rival Wealth will anchor this session. Tim is one of New Zealand’s most respected financial advisors. Tim’s Wairarapa base, vast experience and ability to relate to farmers means there is no one better to understand the opportunities in front of farmers now, and how to best set farming families up for the future.
  • There will also be a seasonal update and climate outlook. Without getting too carried away, weather forecasters are preparing the East Coast for a dry summer. We’ll cover off some strategies you can implement on-farm to make the most of the winter/spring and set your business up for success.

Topics covered

  • Seasonal update and weather outlook.
  • On-farm investments from the basics (fencing, fertiliser and water) to specialist and higher value investments e.g. drainage.
  • How to analyse returns on investment.
  • Off-farm investments and what to look out for.
