Right grass, right place – species selection, management, fitting it in to a complex farm system while making sure it also suits the climate and environment you are farming in make up just some of the puzzle pieces you make on a daily basis. Getting the right grass in the right place can make a difference to your on farm performance.
At a recent Central Canterbury Farming for Profit field day we introduced the topic of Growing Great Grass, we had a broad look at grass species identification, management and the decisions that go into managing a complex farm system.
This workshop has been designed to get you thinking strategically about your pasture management and provide some practical application and tools for you to implement great pasture management.
About the workshop
The workshop will be led by Allister Moorhead and Greg Dunshea from Agricom and will include:
- Strategy: Productive vs perennial, influence of cropping zones on pasture type and productive potential. Farm plans and sowing history to predict spring quality outcomes.
- Management: Soil type, fertility, farm system fit and environment. Key species management, heading date, grazing management, influence of nitrogen.
- Practical: Give A Sod – species identification, feed budgeting, visual residual.
