B+LNZ Marlborough Farming for Profit Field Day

Foundations of top stock performance

Marlborough farming for profit

Join us for a farmer‑focused afternoon built by the Marlborough Farming for Profit committee, centered on the non‑negotiable foundations behind top stock performance. This day is all about getting the basics right and hearing directly from the farmers who do it consistently well regardless of the season.

About the day

Local farmer Fraser Avery will facilitate a panel with Rob Peter, David Grigg, and Mark Zino, sharing the key practices and standards that drive performance on their own farms.

We’ll also hear from Dr Mark Ferguson, who will break down the essentials of genetic gain - covering the traits that make and save money, key decision points for replacements and sires, and why condition‑score genetics matter in pastoral systems.

Speakers

  • Dr Mark Ferguson – Mark is CEO of neXtgen Agri International, a Trans-Tasman livestock genetics consulting firm with a team of 14 independent specialists across Australia and New Zealand. The company works with sheep and beef cattle producers at every level, from elite stud breeders through to commercial operations, helping them make better breeding decisions grounded in evidence. Mark holds a PhD in genetics, has been involved in livestock breeding for over 30 years, and hosts the Head Shepherd podcast.
  • Fraser Avery (Sheep & Beef Farmer, Bonavaree) – Fraser farms at Bonavaree, a property near Lake Grassmere that has been in the Avery family for more than 100 years. Recognised as a high‑performing operator, Fraser is known for his strong business mindset, his focus on people and relationships, and his commitment to continuous improvement. Respected across the region for both his practical knowledge and his ability to bring people together, Fraser will facilitate the farmer panel - bringing his own experience in achieving high stock performance to guide the conversation and draw out insights from fellow top farmers.
