The inaugural CSI B+LNZ Young Farmer Development Scholarship, launched by the Central South Island (CSI) B+LNZ Farmer Council, aims to celebrate excellence and promote career pathways for emerging talent in the region’s sheep and beef industry.

“This scholarship is about investing in the future of our sector,” says Dean Sinnamon, Extension Manager for B+LNZ. “We want to support young farmers who are passionate, driven, and ready to take the next step in their careers.”

Three finalists will be recognised for their achievements and aspirations, with one overall winner receiving funding towards a training or development programme of their choice. The scholarship also includes mentorship from experienced B+LNZ Farmer Council members and opportunities to connect with rural professionals such as vets, consultants, and bankers.

“This isn’t just about financial support, it’s about creating connections, building confidence, and helping young farmers see a future for themselves in the industry,” says Dean.

Who can apply?

Applicants must be aged 18-35, be actively involved or employed in the CSI sheep and beef sector, reside in Otago or South Canterbury, and have at least two years’ experience in the industry.

What’s required?

Applicants will need to outline their five-year career goals, share their passion for the sector, and reflect on challenges, successes, and the mentors who’ve shaped their journey. They’ll also need to detail how they would use the funding, including estimated costs.

Dean says, “This is a chance for young farmers to tell their story and show us where they want to go. We’re looking for people who are committed to making a difference in their communities and the wider industry.”
