Farmers are skilled at growing grass and livestock. Growing people can be more challenging.
B+LNZ is inviting expressions of interest from farmers wanting to strengthen their people management, leadership and communication skills. This Focus Group is designed to help participants build confidence in leading teams, creating positive workplace cultures and getting the best from their people.
Combining theory with practical application, participants will build core skills and apply them on-farm between sessions while learning alongside a small group of like-minded farmers.
The programme is designed to help you build stronger teams, improve workplace performance and create a more productive farming business.
Course overview
Are you a farmer with staff? We all know farmers are great at growing grass and growing livestock. Growing our people though? That’s a little more challenging.
Our farmers have told us they want to build confidence in this area. So we’ve teamed up with No8HR to develop a Focus Group that helps you get the best from your team, grow your leadership and communication skills, and lift productivity.
Combining core theory with hands-on application, you’ll build a solid understanding of employment basics and advance your key strategic skills, giving you the tools and confidence to apply what you learn back on your farm.
How it works
1. Six modules which take up to 12 months
- Work styles and communication.

Participants will walk away with:
- Confidence to lead and manage your team effectively.
- A greater understanding of your communication style and how to get the best from your team.
- Practical tools to lift efficiency and build a great work culture.
- Tools to maximise performance through coaching.
- A greater understanding of employment law and performance management.
- A peer network to share ideas and solutions.
Who should apply?
This Focus Group is suited to farmers who:
- Have at least one staff member.
- Want to build confidence leading and managing their team.
- Can commit to a 6 module learning journey.
- Are keen to work with a small group of like-minded farmers.
Facilitated by Nick Coster of No8 HR
Nick Coster - General Manager and director of No8HR and works with farming businesses, leaders and different ownership groups across New Zealand helping solve people, performance and leadership challenges. Through his work in recruitment, leadership development, organisational design and business restructuring, Nick regularly works alongside farmers and rural business leaders navigating difficult conversations, performance issues, team dynamics and organisational change With a background that combines farming, banking, business advisory and HR consulting, Nick is passionate about building leadership capability across the primary sector. He brings a practical understanding of the realities facing farming businesses and is known for helping leaders create greater clarity, accountability and performance through practical, people solutions.
