B+LNZ Facial Eczema Workshop

Event category
Workshop
Angus cattle in Rangitaiki

Preparing for a High-Risk Season Facial Eczema (FE) remains one of New Zealand's most costly livestock diseases, with an estimated $330 million in lost productivity annually. For every animal showing visible signs of FE, ten others may be suffering liver damage and lost production without any obvious symptoms. With all signs pointing to a particularly challenging season ahead, now is the time to get prepared.

Whether you’re farming sheep, beef, or dairy – this practical workshop will equip you with the tools and knowledge to protect your stock and minimise production losses.

Topics covered

  • Understanding FE risk factors.
  • Tools for monitoring spore counts.
  • What to look for in a post mortem.
  • Practical steps to protect your animals.
  • Building tolerance through breeding.
  • Facial eczema research update.
  • Open discussion and questions – what’s working (or not) locally.

Guest speakers

  • Dr Sarah Smit – Bay Vets.
  • Dr Lorna McNaughton – LIC.
  • Dr Cara Brosnahan – B+LNZ FE Research Programme.
  • Derek Gibson - Farm source.
