An inside look into the automated calf rearing system operated by Matt and Olivia Buckley at a calf rearing block located by their Dairy Farm, 15km from Piopio.
The Buckley's have implemented some advanced calf-rearing technology by Bell-Booth, partnered with Elite Beef Semen from Gene Z to create a system that gets the best out of that calf from days old through to weaning at 100kg LW.
Beef calves are reared alongside dairy replacements in this newly established facility. These animals are then taken to the enterprises other properties to be finished amongst their sheep breeding and finishing areas.
The team at Eight Mile Farms intends to utillise the data collected through the rearing system and Farmax to inform decisions related to dairy beef genetics thereby ensuring the most efficient utilisation of the pasture they’re growing.
