This hands-on workshop is designed to help farmers better understand and interpret the information presented in bull catalogues and learn which structural traits are important when selecting a bull.

Buying the right bull is one of the most important decisions in any commercial beef operation. This practical workshop will give commercial farmers the skills and confidence to make informed bull buying decisions that align with their system and long term goals. We’ll step through the key parts of selecting bull - from defining your breeding objectives, to choosing the right breeder, and assessing individual bulls using genetic and physical information.

Topics covered

  • Setting clear breeding objectives.
  • Choosing breeders that align with your goals.
  • Using EBVs, indexes, and other genetic tools like nProve.
  • Assessing bulls for structural soundness.

This workshop suits commercial beef farmers wanting to sharpen their bull buying skills, lift herd performance, and make genetics work harder on their farms.

Facilitator

  • Dave Warburton - Vet Services Hawkes Bay.

Lunch will be provided. Many thanks to our hosts the Chesterman Family - Koanui Polled Herefords.
