This week’s notices:

Celebrating rural women

To mark International Rural Women’s Day on 15 October, B+LNZ commissioned an article to showcase the story of Whakatāne cattle farmer Chrissy Weeks. Chrissy won the B+LNZ livestock farm category for Bay of Plenty in the Ballance Farm Environment Award this year. The article was published on the NZ Herald website as part of our effort to connect with urban audiences, sharing positive stories that build understanding and demonstrate the value of the red meat sector. Our thanks to all the women who are helping shape the future of NZ farming. Read more.

Finishers wanted for Beef-on-Dairy Progeny Test calves

B+LNZ is seeking finishers interested in taking lines of 60 or more Beef-on-Dairy Progeny Test calves from November. Up to 120 steers and/or 120 heifers will be available at approximately 100kg liveweight, sired from a range of high-performing beef sires. Participating farms will need suitable cattle handling facilities and be willing to have liveweights and ultrasound measurements collected by B+LNZ during the finishing period, with all data collection costs covered by B+LNZ. More information here.

Ram nominations for the Sheep Progeny Test

B+LNZ invites stud breeders to nominate rams for the 2027 mating of the Sheep Central Progeny Test (CPT). Open to Maternal and Terminal sires, the CPT underpins B+LNZ’s national sheep genetic evaluation (the NZGE). Including a ram from your breed group 'connects' you to the NZGE and validates the performance of your group’s flocks against other NZ flocks. Nominations close Friday 20 November. Access the nomination form.

Submissions open for measuring methane in sheep

For stud breeders who want to measure emissions in their flocks during 2027, Expressions of Interest (EOI) are now open. Combined with genotyping, these measurements help generate methane breeding values. Find more info and the EOI form here.
