‘Brunch on Us’ brings Te Tai Tokerau together

When times get tough, rural communities rally, and that’s exactly what happened across Te Tai Tokerau this calving season.

Led by Rural Support Trust NZ and backed by sector partners including Beef + Lamb New Zealand (B+LNZ), the 2025 Te Tai Tokerau Brunch on Us events brought hundreds of farmers, families, and rural folk together to connect over brunch.

From Kaitaia to Helensville, more than 840 wraps were served up whilst conversations flowed. Alison Whiteford, B+LNZ’s Northland Extension Manager, says the events were a hit.

“These events weren’t just about food – they were about connection, support, and wellbeing,” says Alison. “We saw firsthand how a simple meal and a good yarn can lift spirits and strengthen community ties. The feedback has been incredible. Feeling that you are not alone and are supported is so important.”

The Rural Support Trust does this kind of work all year round, supporting farmers and growers through tough times, whether it’s adverse weather, financial pressure, or personal challenges. They run events, offer one-on-one support, and connect people with the help they need.

Rachelle O'Callaghan from the Te Tai Tokerau Rural Support Trust says events like “Brunch on Us” are a great way to check in with your neighbours.

“Sometimes it’s the casual catch-ups that make the biggest difference. You never know who might need a bit of support, and these events create a space where people feel comfortable to talk.”

A recent report shows just how vital this work is. In 2024, over 1,500 people reached out to Rural Support Trusts across the country, and that number is expected to climb to over 2,000 annually for the next five years. An anonymous survey showed 94% of those who used the service felt less stress afterwards.

B+LNZ is proud to stand alongside Rural Support Trust NZ and other sector partners to back initiatives like this.

A big thanks to everyone who made the Northland events happen: Fonterra, DairyNZ, FMG, Ministry for Primary Industries, Farm Source Northland, and of course, the Te Tai Tokerau Rural Support Trust.
