Animal welfare regulations

In 2015, the Government amended the Animal Welfare Act (1999) to allow for making regulations governing how people care for animals. Since this change, B+LNZ has been engaging with the Government and other livestock industry stakeholders affected by the proposals.

In May 2016, B+LNZ prepared a submission on behalf of sheep and beef farmers that was developed in consultation with members of the B+LNZ Sheep and Beef Farmer Councils.

Further discussions

In early 2017, MPI undertook further discussions with stakeholders on the proposed regulations. B+LNZ will continue to seek to ensure the outcomes protect the welfare of our stock and the reputation of the sector whilst being practical and proportionate.
