You can do a simple calculation using your existing farm area and stock numbers to get started with ‘emissions numbers’. You can also add further information to give you a more complete picture of your farm including sequestration.
Knowing your numbers will give you extra data to base your business decisions on. It will help you build a resilient, future-proofed business and it will give our customers, and the public, confidence that we’re taking responsible action on climate change.
About B+LNZ’s GHG Calculator
This calculator was funded by the Red Meat Profit Partnership (RMPP) and B+LNZ. It will help farmers and the sector meet early milestones of the He Waka Eke Noa climate action partnership that puts management and mitigation of GHG emissions in farmers’ hands, instead of a tax at processor level.
Calculations will be refined over time as more reporting requirements are developed. Farmers will in future be required to have a plan for managing emissions and while B+LNZ provides tools such as farm plans to enable this, it remains the user’s responsibility to meet any such requirements.
What you’ll need to use the GHG Calculator
• Farm details (including trading account GST number, land areas).
• Your stock reconciliation (from your own records or annual set of accounts).
• Your fertiliser use (from your fertiliser company).
• Woody vegetation cover estimates.
We have an Example Farm Calculation (PDF, 824KB) you can practice with as well.
While B+LNZ’s GHG Calculator is based on extensive research and industry consultation, and has been assessed by the He Waka Eke Noa programme as meeting the requirements for calculating greenhouse gas emissions, B+LNZ will not be liable for any costs or claims that may arise in connection with your use of this tool.
