Videos capture ground-breaking projects

Matt and Lynley Wyeth are continually challenging convention. The Wairarapa sheep and beef farmers have pushed the sheep- and beef-management paradigm through their four Beef + Lamb New Zealand demonstration farm projects and are now using technology to showcase their projects to a wider farming audience.

Working in conjunction with B+LNZ extension manager Lauren Cameron, the couple have produced four four-minute videos summarising each of their demonstration farm projects:

  • Orphan lamb management
  • Intensive triplet management
  • Early weaning
  • Grain feeding R2 cattle.

These are available now on the B+LNZ YouTube channel:

Cameron says that the Wyeths elected to make individual videos of each project so farmers can choose those most relevant to their farming business.

A fifth video clip introduces the Wyeths and the reasons behind their participation in B+LNZ’s Demonstration Farm Programme.

Increasing productivity and efficiency

Matt and Lynley farm 1000ha, running 12,500 stock units within their Spring Valley Enterprises operation.

With a focus on increasing on-farm productivity and efficiency, the couple took the opportunity to participate in B+LNZ’s Demonstration Farm Programme in 2013.

Demo farm seminar

Cameron says that because this is the Wyeth’s final year in the Demonstration Farm Programme, they are keen to share their results with farmers and the wider industry.

The results of their demonstration farm projects will be presented at a seminar on Thursday, 7 July at the Copthorne Hotel and Resort Solway Park, Masterton, from 9–11.30am.

The seminar will include a panel discussion, made up of the professionals involved in each of the Wyeths’ projects. Cameron says there will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions – but encourages those wishing to attend to send their questions in prior to the seminar.
