An initiative offering scholarships for new apprenticeships in the agricultural and horticultural industries is being welcomed by Beef + Lamb New Zealand.

Primary ITO launched the scholarship programme last week in response to the urgent need for skilled workers in the primary sector. Scholarships are available for apprenticeships in the sheep and beef industry, dairy farming and horticulture and will cover fees for the duration of the apprenticeship programme, which is typically two to three years.

B+LNZ’s Sector Capability Manager Doug Macredie says the scholarships should increase the number of sheep and beef employees completing New Zealand Certificates in Agriculture under the apprenticeship delivery model. Formal training and learning while working has been proven to increase productivity, innovation and motivation for the employee and across the farm business.

Applications for the Primary ITO Apprenticeship scholarships close at the end of November 2019.
