About the day

For a lot of sheep farmers, putting fat lambs on the truck is the highlight of the sheep farming calendar. However for the breeding purists amongst us, it doesn’t get any better selecting the A flock for the maternal rams and seeing the poor performing ewes drop into the B flock.

To aid in this selection process, at these two sessions, we deep dive into sheep confirmation and constitution and discuss what a “fit for purpose” sheep looks like for specific sheep breeding operations.

Sessions

  1. Morning Session | 9.30am to 12pm at Te Awa Awa, Te Awa Awa Road, Gladstone. Lunch supplied.
  2. Afternoon Session | 2.00pm to 4.30pm at Te Keo, Castle Hill Road, Alfredton. BBQ and refreshments supplied.

Topics will be the same at the morning and afternoon session.

Topics covered

  • We will hear from and see Guy Martin in action as he uses his expert knowledge to class lines of ewes based on their confirmation and constituent. This will determine what he thinks should be breed from to generate ewe lambs replacements, while maximising the number mated to the terminal sire.
  • Work through a replacement rate and age structure calculation and discuss strategies to optimise the quality of ewe flock.
  • While ewes are in the yards will run a condition scoring refresher and outline strategies to lift the tailend.

Guest speakers

  • Subject Matter Expert: Guy Martin (Livestock Confirmation Ltd).
  • Host farmers: Richard Tosswill (morning session) and James McKay (afternoon session).
